Four Corners Wine & Spirits

East Haddam, CT

The Isaac Ackley House, built in 1760, was restored and renovated over time. In 2019, the property underwent adaptive re-use, converted to commercial use. The house is now used as an office for Fellner Architects. A barn/studio has been replaced with a new 2,027 s.f. shop building, serving as Four Corners Wine & Spirits. The design concept of this new structure provides a 21st century coherency with the architecture of the Colonial Georgian house. Multiple gables, an entry with colonnade, along with a complementary landscape and textured concrete walk with a ramp for office access serve to integrate the site. The interior’s open wood truss structure, use of original barn boards for finishes, the detailing of shelves and displays, and the colorful bottle array of wine and spirits evoke the notion of a colonial tavern within a contemporary context. Ultimately, this adaptive re-use offers a rejuvenated new life for this historic property.
