East Haddam Historical Society Museum
East Haddam, CT
East Haddam certainly has a prolific history and cultural heritage, and there is a unique opportunity for this museum to communicate through its architecture and exhibits. FA was engaged by the museum to develop new concepts for the potential rejuvenation of this existing museum. In terms of an initial perception from the road, proposed trellis wings flanking the building façade reveal murals depicting themes. Additional murals along the west wing’s wall announce upcoming events, and large translucent backlit images at the Wynn-Shepard wing evoke local historic sites and buildings. This new assemblage of visual art, along with enhancements in architectural form starts to engage the visitor’s imagination. A new low-slope pathway leads the visitor to the main entry, and a new pergola and sign becomes a visual focal point. The architecture also intentionally evokes the detailing of the Victorian Second Empire and Italianate Styles.
The proposed new interior layout provides visitors with an enhanced, sequential experience for engaging and learning about the history, art, and the interactive cultural realms of this town. It also accommodates the optimization of spaces and circulation for exhibits, gatherings for events, and staff functions. The intent is to offer an evocative path of exploration for visitors. Although this project has not yet moved forward, this museum has the potential to present, share, and communicate stories about East Haddam’s collective history, art, and culture in unique ways that provide meaningful insights.
