Zion Baptist Church
Middletown, CT
The program for this existing church required renovations and an expansion with accessibility features. The solution includes a new entry, remodeled narthex with elevator, and a remodeled sanctuary. An addition at the rear includes a new altar, choir area, offices, and support spaces. A new baptismal pool sits below the altar with a horizontal sliding door within the platform floor system. The lower level includes a remodeled kitchen and fellowship hall, new offices, meeting and classrooms, bathrooms, and storage. The exterior work includes a facelift with new roof shingles and cupola, as well as the new ramp-stair entry. The new addition at the rear consists of a primary hip roof with a continuous plane over a stepped plan configuration. There are two flanking shed roof elements, acting as wings. A dormered clerestory allows light to spill down over the altar. Ultimately, these modifications and additions have transformed the church into a responsive house of worship.
