Champion House

East Haddam, CT

This historic building was constructed in the 1780s, with two major expansions during the 19th century. The present owners decided to move on site, resulting in this late 20th century 1,300 s.f. two-story expansion and renovation of this 12-unit apartment building for their owner’s apartment. Appearing before the Historic District Commission, FA presented the scheme which is a modified hybrid of the Adam and Italianate Styles. In order for the addition to be coherent and complementary with the existing architecture, considerations involved scale, form, fenestration, materials, colors, and overall character. The solution resulted in a simple rectangular shape with a generous wrap-around porch, stucco walls, hip roof forms with cupola, and compatible cornice, trim and column details. The layout and orientation also incorporate the magnificent views of the Connecticut River.
