Old Jail Feasibility Study

Haddam, CT

The State of Connecticut offered the Town of Haddam the Old Jail along with four outbuildings and 51 acres of land. FA was retained by the Town to perform a comprehensive Feasibility Study of this 19th century jail. The work included: evaluation of site and building conditions, identification of hazardous materials, identification of short-term and long-termĀ  restoration/renovation/rehabilitation, as well as a series of suggestions and evaluation of potential reuse concepts for the site and buildings, and the development of preliminary costs for short-term and long-term repairs/renovations. Architectural, structural, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and site systems were reviewed and documented.

Considering the historical and architectural significance of the Old Jail, one of the suggested concepts included the development of a Jail Museum/Resource Center along with municipal offices, and recreation fields. Along with the final report, FA also produced and presented a series of presentations to the community. Subsequently, this Study served as a vehicle for analysis, presentation and open dialogue for the Town and the community. Ultimately, the Town voted to accept the property from the State.
