Chapel Reborn

East Haddam, CT

Grace Chapel, consecrated in 1901, eventually ceased to be used and sat empty for a few decades, remaining as a silent reminder of a past era. The present owner of the property had used the building for storage. Eventually, the seed was planted to convert the chapel into a residence, offering a unique adaptive re-use opportunity for FA.

Maintaining the integrity and charm of the existing structure was paramount. The interior was optimum for conversion to an open plan and the altar/sacristy was well suited for the bedroom/bathroom. Indeed, the cathedral space with wood trusses offers a sense of well-being. Maintaining longevity of the exterior envelope, renovations included replacing wood shingle siding and roofing. The existing porch on the south side was disassembled and re-constructed on the north side, serving as entry.

The Shingle Style with a touch of Folk Victorian exterior expression remains intact. In response to programming and code requirements, the new spaces, closed-cell spray foam insulation for walls/roof, air-source heat pump system for heating/cooling, along with new interior wood finishes complete the transformation. This metamorphosis through adaptive re-use is complete for the chapel reborn with a new life.
