Connecticut River Deck–Garage

East Haddam, CT

The intent was to provide a new Deck-Garage addition at the rear west side with massing, scale, proportions, and detailing that is harmonious and compatible with the existing architecture and terrain of the Matthew Plumbstead House. Regarding architectural style, this eclectic house, completed in 1878, represents the Victorian Second Empire period with minor flavorings of both Italianate and Gothic Revival.

The existing driveway was modified to accommodate a slight drop in grade for access. The garage accommodates vehicles along with a new exterior storage area under the new roof deck with lattice panels. In turn, the new roof deck is essentially an extension of the existing porch areas. As a response to the site’s expansive view of the Connecticut River, the roof deck steps down for a lower balcony level, thereby allowing for unobstructed views from the main roof deck. The new deck railings extend and match the existing porch railings. This complements and harmonizes with the existing architecture, thus celebrating the notion of an open, spacious deck with a sense of lightness. In addition, the new lattice panel system of the storage area supports the theme of lightness and airiness, as well as matches the lattice below the existing front porch areas. In turn, the new cornice details, trim, and clapboard siding contribute to maintaining the historic character of the house.
