Lake Pocotopaug House

East Hampton, CT

The original one-story house and garage was purchased by the owners with the intent for a major transformation. The program required connecting the two structures with a new infill space and adding a new second floor. This allowed for the creation of a new main floor for living, cooking, dining areas, and a master bedroom suite. The lower floor accommodates a series of bedrooms, bathrooms, and a den, while the space over the garage works as a guest suite. Ultimately, the 2,500 s.f. additions expanded this home to 5,900 s.f.

An arched entry with stone steps offers an inviting introduction to the home. The form of the house consists of a series of elements including gables, hips, sheds, multi-level eaves, and octagons, thereby creating unique interior spatial volumes. The street façade consists of an assemblage of asymmetrical elements dressed in stone veneer and vinyl siding. In contrast, the lake façade consists of multi-level decks establishing a dialogue with the lake. This home, a fusion of Shingle Style and Lakefront Vernacular, is designed to accommodate living, leisure, and recreation.
