Long Island Sound House
Groton, CT
This early 20th century house was completely transformed into a new rejuvenated home. The interior was gutted and re-designed with a flexible, open plan on the first floor, an expanded master bedroom suite on the second floor, and further alterations for bedrooms on the third floor. Furthermore, the interior stair was relocated with a new configuration to optimize access and clearances. As a bonus, part of the garage was converted into an office.
It was important to create a new visual statement that is coherent with the neighborhood architecture. The result is a New England waterfront blend of styles with integrated form, materials, and details. The stucco face was enveloped with new cedar siding and trim. In turn, a new energy-efficient heating system, low-e glass, new insulation, shading elements, and natural ventilation are integrated in the design of this sustainable home. A small second floor walk-out porch from the master bedroom restores the charm that the original house had lost. The re-designed wrap-around porch with round columns and cedar covered rails gives the house a visual base, coupled with new stone planter walls that anchor the home with the site. In turn, the re-located stair offers a proper sense of entry for this re-born waterfront home on Long Island Sound.
