Chapel at Johnsonville

East Haddam, CT

Johnsonville was once a thriving mill town of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the mid 1960s, a wealthy industrialist purchased the property. He eventually brought in old structures from around the East Coast, including a general store, livery stable, schoolhouse, chapel, as well as a steamboat for the pond to recreate a 19th century village on the former mill site. There are also a number of existing historical houses. It was opened to the public during some of the holidays and occasionally for private functions. After the owner died in 1998, the property was closed to the public and the antiques were auctioned off. It was eventually purchased by a hotel corporation in 2001 for the purpose of constructing a multi-family housing community. For various reasons, this project never went forward. In the meantime, the site remained unoccupied and fell into disarray. In 2017, Iglesia Ni Cristo – Church of Christ acquired this 62-acre rural site with the eleven existing structures. The initial aim of the church was to preserve and stabilize the historical buildings. In turn, FA was engaged to renovate and transform an existing house through adaptive re-use into a new seminary. FA was also engaged to rehabilitate the existing chapel with complete renovations and an addition. The new shed-roof bathrooms addition acts as a subservient wing to the existing main gabled form. For accessibility at the main entry, there is a new concrete ramp. New signage with the church’s logo is integrated at the front façade over the entry. This rejuvenated chapel brings new life to the Johnsonville site, ultimately setting the pathway for further renovations and upgrades to the remaining buildings. The next chapter of Johnsonville is underway.
