Earth Sheltered House

East Haddam, CT

This home is embraced by the Earth with bermed enclosure walls along with wing walls, and a segmented roof of shifted gable and shed forms that accommodate a green roof. Sustainable strategies include passive solar, natural daylighting, solar hot water, geothermal heating and cooling, and rainwater harvesting.

Materials include fiber cement board siding, engineered lumber framing, wood plank ceiling, zero VOC paints, extruded polystyrene and cellulose insulation, concrete countertop, LED lighting, and recycling bins. In addition, there are Energy Star appliances, permeable pavers, and rain gardens with indigenous landscaping. Although the clients decided to live in Florida and not build this house, this 2,515 s.f. design can serve as a prototype.
