Hamlet Manor

Durham, CT

The intent for this 15-unit 55+ housing project was to avoid monotony and predictable repetition. Thus, the resulting layout evolved into building footprints with stepped configurations and undulating facades. The region’s local barns and farmhouses generated the design concept which contextually connects with Connecticut’s pastoral vernacular vocabulary. Consequently, the integration of building form, intersecting gable roof shapes, porches, breezeways, arched garage doors, gable trim, cupolas, lanterns and landscaping are elements used as variations on a theme. The units are designed to be fully accessible with generous spaces for living and entertainment. A central gazebo acts as a focal point on the site connected by sidewalks and walking trails. Ultimately, this intimate 55+ housing community resides in harmony within the rural, pastoral language of Connecticut.
