Mercy by the Sea Spiritual Retreat and Conference Center
Madison, CT
The Sisters of Mercy obtained ownership of this waterfront property in 1949, originally owned by W.T. Grant. Initially used as a Novitiate, in 1973 the Mercy Center was officially rededicated as a conference and ecumenical center for spiritual renewal. In 2010, the complex of connected buildings surrounding a landscaped courtyard needed programming changes, interior/exterior upgrades, code updates, hotel room reconfigurations, ADA accessibility, energy efficiency, material/system renovations, as well as new amenities.
Extensive modifications, designed by FA, including spatial reconfiguration address these needs. A new ramp and main entry porch create an inviting entry. Sustainable strategies include new integrated balconies with shading/solar hot water panels, building re-use/renovation, de-construction, integrated waste management and recycling, new insulation, and new efficient mechanical/electrical systems. A new fire sprinkler system and structural updates accommodate code compliance. In addition, landscape improvements enhance the site’s visual impact. Indeed, the design modifications read as a Fusion of Prairie Style and 21st Century Modern Minimalist Vernacular. Ultimately, this spiritual retreat and renewal conference center continues to offer a peaceful setting, supported by programs, as well as hospitality, providing for day and overnight gatherings.
