Orangerie
Higganum, CT
This Victorian 2nd Empire style house offers a vernacular vocabulary for the design of this project. The renovation includes a complete interior remodeling of the kitchen along with a new built-in dining niche. The 416 s.f. expansion includes a new entry with porch, Orangerie, laundry, storage, and ½ bath, as well as a pathway to the kitchen. The orangerie form consists of a rectangular box with articulated panels and tall, slender windows. In turn, it is capped with a metal-seam pyramid roof. The interior of the orangerie is showered with ample natural light and the pine ceiling offers a generous sense of space. Furthermore, the copper finish ceiling of the kitchen seems to glow as it reflects the interior elements. Low-E glass and spray foam insulation effectively provide energy efficiency. Ultimately, this unique addition provides spatial and functional improvements, as well as a quintessential modern interpretation of Victorian 2nd Empire architecture to enhance this historical house.
