Shagbark Lumber & Farm Supply

East Haddam, CT

During the late 1700s, a simple barn was built near Town Street. It had served a humble existence as a tobacco barn until 1946 when it was converted into a dairy barn. In 1985, the present owner transformed the barn into a hardware/feed store with an initial phase of renovations, thereby planting the seed for a family-owned and operated business.

A 3,909 s.f. addition to the existing 9,553 s.f. building was designed by FA and completed in 2007. The building design’s massing, gable roof forms, basic elements, materials, colors, and details including the full-façade front porch and cupola are coherent with the original building’s vocabulary. Through adaptive re-use with its phased renovations and additions, this building is a quintessential 21st century representation of the New England Barn/Farmhouse Style.
