Converting a Cape Style vacation house into a permanent home for a Connecticut couple moving to Maine provided unique programming opportunities. Although it certainly possessed sentimental value, charm, and personality, this small house had numerous limitations along with the lack of a central heating system. Responding to the need for additional space, the existing garage was converted into bedrooms and bathrooms. A small extension at the rear also allowed for extra space. Shifting interior areas allowed for an expanded and remodeled kitchen. Another small addition at the front with a porch created an inviting entry. A new energy-efficient geothermal heating and cooling system was also introduced. To accommodate their vehicles and yard equipment, a new separate garage was constructed. All in all, this rejuvenated home along the rural coast of Maine now serves as a comfortable abode.
