Tri-Town Youth Services and Deep River Visiting Nurses Center

Deep River, CT

The Town of Deep River received a $500,000 Small Cities Grant through the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD). Thus, there was an opportunity to develop a new facility to house both a Youth Center and a Visiting Nurses group. In terms of context, the site has a pastoral quality, resting within a residential neighborhood of Queen Ann, Cape Cod, and Italianate Styles. The design, which needed to coexist in harmony within this context, evolved into a New England Cape Cod/Farmhouse hybrid solution.

The use of entry porches and columns, intersecting and scissored gables, cupola with weathervane, double hung windows, clapboard siding and articulated trim are integrated to establish a contextual relationship within the surrounding neighborhood. Interior spaces include offices, treatment room, counseling room, group and recreation rooms, bathrooms, storage, and common lobby areas. Essentially, this building fulfills the spatial and functional needs of the Tri-Town Youth Services and the Visiting Nurses groups, as well as serving the needs of the community.
